How to support youth to start GSAs in schools

COC-Netherlands and ILGA-Europe jointly organised a capacity-building seminar on supporting youth to start GSAs in schools on 6-8 November in Amsterdam. GSAs are groups of LGBTI and non-LGBTI people that want to create a safer school for everyone. GSAs are often named Gay-Straight Alliances but can also mean Gender and Sexuality Alliance.

12 participants representing various of our member organisations had the opportunity to meet students, teachers and heads of schools, all members of GSAs in different schools of the country. We spent together a day in the Coornhert Lyceum of Haarlem, where the national GSA congress was taking place. Participants also learnt more about how COC-Netherlands had successfully built its “inside-out” approach and the benefits of youth empowerment and grassroots activism. Then, they started to explore how to adapt this approach to their own context.
