Today is International Women’s Day
Today people around the world mark International Women’s Day. While Europe has made huge progress towards gender equality, women are still being discriminated against and disadvantaged in many areas of life.
Lesbian, bisexual and transgender women are facing even greater disadvantages because of their sexual orientation and gender identity and as a result often suffer from multiple discrimination and disadvantages.
Patricia Prendiville, Executive Director of ILGA-Europe, said:
“Today ILGA-Europe wants to express its solidarity with all women around the world and everybody who is fighting for gender equality. This year is announced by the European Union as the Year of Equal Opportunities for All. We call on the EU institutions and all non-governmental organisations working for the rights of various minority and disadvantaged groups to use this year to demonstrate solidarity with each other and address the issues of multiple discrimination. While each disadvantaged and discriminated against group has various specific issues and ways of addressing them, we also need to remember that a person is not always defined by a single identity.“
