Statement on Nils Muižnieks’ comment on homophobia and transphobia

ILGA-Europe today welcomed the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Nils Muižnieks’ comment on homophobia and transphobia

Executive Director of ILGA-Europe, Evelyne Paradis, said: “With a noticeable rise in homophobic, biphobic and transphobic hate crime in a number of countries, and the lack of legislation to protect LGBTI people from discrimination in some others, Commissioner Muižnieks’ comment could not be more timely. The plight of perceived gay and bisexual men in Chechnya is falling down the media agenda, and we must increase focus and attention on LGBTI human rights in Chechnya and right across the continent.”

“We especially welcome the call for robust legislation against those who abuse others because of their sexual orientation or gender identity, something still sadly lacking in many countries. That is only the first step, though, and we also need commitment to enforce the law once it is enacted. National governments can lead social change by enacting and enforcing progressive legislation on LGBTI issues, and we urge all governments to consider the High Commissioner’s comment and act upon it.”
