The Frontline: How Pride Became Democracy’s Front Line

Across Europe, Pride has become much more than an annual celebration of LGBTI visibility. It has become a clear test of a country’s democratic resilience.

As governments and anti-rights movements increasingly target Pride marches through disinformation, political scapegoating, funding restrictions and violence, the rights of LGBTI people are often the first freedoms to come under attack. What begins with Pride rarely ends there.

In this episode of The Frontline, host Brian Finnegan explores why anti-LGBTI narratives have become such an effective tool for those seeking to weaken democratic institutions and restrict civic space. The conversation also reflects on the shocking events at Berlin’s Christopher Street Day and what such anti-LGBTI violence reveals about the broader challenges facing democracy across Europe.

Brian is joined by Chris Kremidas-Courtney, Senior Advisor at Defend Democracy and the European Policy Centre, and Hripsime Kizogyan, Executive Director of Pink Armenia, who has documented how anti-LGBTI narratives are increasingly intertwined with anti-democratic politics in Armenia and across the region.

Together, they examine the growing connection between attacks on LGBTI rights and democratic backsliding, why Pride is so often the first target when fundamental freedoms come under pressure, the common patterns emerging across different countries, and what European institutions must do to protect freedom of assembly, defend civic space and strengthen democracy itself.

It makes for an important and timely discussion. Listen now!
