Hungary assembly act timeline
On 18 March 2025, Hungary adopted a law restricting freedom of assembly by linking LGBTI events to the anti-LGBTQI propaganda law passed in 2021 that bans showing children LGBTI-related content. The European Commission had already launched legal proceedings against Hungary in 2021, arguing that the law violates various EU laws, Charter rights, including the right to non-discrimination and freedom of expression, and also negates the values of the EU. In June 2025, the Advocate General of the CJEU supported this view, stating the law breaches EU law through discrimination and censorship. A final ruling is pending. This living timeline tracks developments in Hungary’s Assembly Act and its impact on civil liberties.
