Davis looks forward to a strong Spanish chairmanship of the Committee of
Ministers
[19/11/2008] On 19 November in
Madrid, Secretary General Terry Davis met with Spain’s Minister for Foreign
Affairs Miguel Angel Moratinos, to discuss the country’s forthcoming
chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers. Respect for human rights, the
fight against terrorism, racism and intolerance, the protection of minorities
and minority languages and intercultural dialogue were among the issues
raised.

Quadripartite meeting between the Council of Europe and the European
Union
[10/11/2008] On 10 November,
Carl Bildt, Chairman of the Committee of Ministers and Sweden’s Minister for
Foreign Affairs and Deputy Secretary General Maud de Boer-Buquicchio, met
Jean-Pierre Jouyet, the French State Secretary for European Affairs and Karel
Kovanda, Deputy Director General in the External Relations Directorate General
of the European Commission, in Brussels for the 27th Quadripartite meeting
between the Council of Europe and the European Union. The meeting was held at

Conclusions
Human rights conference in Stockholm
[06/11/2008]
The Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers Chair Sweden is hosting a
conference on 'Systematic Work for Human Rights Implementation,' on 6-7
November in Stockholm, to ensure that the reality within countries corresponds
with regional and international human rights standards. Entitled 'Rights
work!' the conference is organised in close cooperation with the Council of
Europe. Conference speakers include: Ms Nyamko Sabuni, Swedish Minister of
Integration and Gender Equality, Gunilla Carlsson, Swedish Minister of
International Development Cooperation, Thomas Hammarberg, Council of Europe’s
Commissioner for Human Rights and Yavuz Mildon, President of the Council of
Europe’s Congress of Local and Regional Authorities.

Focus on conflict in Georgia, Protocol 14 and gender equality
[05/11/2008] On 5 November, the
Committee of Ministers continued its discussion on the conflict in Georgia, on
the basis of a draft action plan proposed by the Swedish Chairmanship. The
Committee discussed gender mainstreaming and also learned of the effects of
the non-entry into force of Protocol No. 14 to the European Convention on
Human Rights.

Conference on protection of the rights of people with disabilities
[29/10/2008]
A conference on ''Protection and promoting the rights of persons with
disabilities in Europe: towards full participation, inclusion and
empowerment'' opened on 29 October in Strasbourg. The event aimed to promote
the recognition and application of the UN Convention and the implementation of
the Council of Europe Action Plan 2006-2015.
