Dear Sir,
First Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride March in Sofia
I am writing on behalf of ILGA-Europe, the European Region of the International Lesbian and Gay Association, to ask you to reinforce your support for one of the fundamental manifestations of democracy – freedom of assembly and expression.
As you know, the Bulgarian Gay Organisation GEMINI is hosting the first lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) Pride March this Saturday in Sofia. This news has caused some individuals to come out with strong messages of hatred and intolerance towards LGBT people and their rights.
As you know, Europe is a continent which cherishes dearly its democratic traditions. In the not so distant past Europe witnessed horrendous human rights violations and tragedies because ignoring and not tackling hatred and intolerance. We need to be vigilant today in order not to allow the same crimes as happened in Europe before.
Therefore we urge you to publicly condemn the so-called “Week of Intolerance” aimed at promoting hatred and providing misleading and false information about LGBT people in Bulgaria and express your support for the first LGBT Pride event in Sofia organised by GEMINI.
As a confirmation of your commitment to the principles of democracy and human rights, we urge you to sign ILGA-Europe’s appeal to Mayors of European cities “On freedom of assembly and expression for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people”.
Join the Mayors of Paris, Nicosia, Amsterdam, Winterthur, London, Stockholm, Cologne, Barcelona, Venice, Vienna, Bologna, Manchester, Copenhagen, Budapest, Ljubljana, Zürich, Berlin, Dublin, Luxembourg and Oslo and show that Sofia is a true European capital which values the freedom and dignity of each and every citizen.
