ILGA-Europe’s statement on International Women’s Day 2010

08/03/2010

Today people around the world mark International Women’s Day. While Europe has made significant progress towards gender equality, women are still being discriminated against and disadvantaged in many areas of life.

Lesbian, bisexual and trans women face even greater disadvantages because of their sexual orientation and gender identity in addition to their sex and as a result often suffer from acute forms of multiple discrimination and disadvantages.
Linda Freimane, Co-Chair of the Executive Board of ILGA-Europe, said:

“Today ILGA-Europe wants to express its solidarity with all women around the world and everybody who is fighting for gender equality.

In particular, we would like to stress our three current demands:

  • Call on European institutions to tackle violence against women, including that against lesbian, bisexual and trans women.
  • Call for European and national equality legislation and policies covering multiple discrimination in order to advance equality for all women.
  • Call on European norms on gender equality and gender mainstreaming to be enforced in all spheres of life, regardless of women’s sexual orientation and gender identity”
