Lithuanian Parliament bans ‘propaganda of homosexuality and bisexuality’

On 16 June 2009, the Seimas, Lithuanian parliament, in a final reading and with a great majority (67 votes for, 3 against and 4 abstained) adopted an amended Law on the Protection of Minors against the Detrimental Effect of Public Information. According to this law, ‘propaganda of homosexuality and bisexuality’ is one of the detrimental affects on the minors and information on homosexuality and bisexuality is banned from schools and any other places where it can be accessed by youth.

Today is the first day of the European Parliament Elections 2009 which are taking place across 27 EU Member States until 7 June. ILGA-Europe calls on every EU citizen who cares about human rights to go to the polls and vote for the candidates who are committed to equality.

Concerns over Lithuanian draft law to “ban propagation of homosexuality”

On 2 June 2009, the Lithuanian Parliament, the Seimas, will vote on an amendment to the Law on the Protection of Minors against Detrimental Effects of Public Information aimed at banning access to information on homosexuality and bisexuality.

The Baltic Pride March is banned: Latvia is turning its back to European democracy

This morning the Riga City Council has banned the Baltic Pride March which was planned for this Saturday and initially allowed by the City a few days ago.

One Union, two realities: Brussels and Baltic Prides

On 16 May 2009, two very different Pride events are taking place in the European Union: one in Brussels and the other in Riga. ILGA-Europe and the Belgian Lesbian and Gay Pride (BLGP) are joining efforts to monitor and support the Baltic Pride in Riga. By bringing the attention to these Pride events, ILGA-Europe and BLGP want to highlight the gaps which still exist in relations to the situation for LGBT people in the EU.

European Parliament sends signal to EU Member States – anti-discrimination directive needs to be adopted

Today the European Parliament with a significant majority (363 in favour, 226 against and 64 abstention) voted in favour of a report supporting the introduction of a new EU anti-discrimination directive to prohibit discrimination on the grounds of age, disability, religion/belief and sexual orientation in areas other than employment.

Show your courage and support new anti-discrimination directive!

On 1-2 April 2009, Members of the European Parliament will debate and vote on the European Parliament’s report regarding a new EU anti-discrimination directive which if adopted will extent protections against discrimination on the grounds of age, disability, religion/belief and sexual orientation in areas other than employment. On 17 March 2009, the European Parliament’s Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) approved this report.

ILGA-Europe’s position regarding statements by two MEPs and media coverage of the “Different Families, Same Love” exhibition at European Parliament

On 10 December 2008, International Human Rights Day, ILGA-Europe in cooperation with the European Parliament’s LGBT Rights Intergroup and Hélène Goudin, Member of the European Parliament, hosted an exhibition of 12 LGBT families images at the European Parliament entitled “Different Families, Same Love”. The 12 images highlight the challenges and issues LGBT families and their children face because of the lack of legal recognition, as well as the positive developments at European level advancing the legal situation for LGBT families and their children.

On the occasion of International Human Rights Day ILGA-Europe highlights the lack of recognition and protections for LGBT families and their children in Europe

Today is International Human Rights Day and it marks the 60th anniversary since the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations. This year ILGA-Europe highlights the legal discrimination and social exclusion which lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) families and their children in Europe still experience.

ILGA-Europe’s Executive Board elects new Co-Chairs and officers

During the meeting of ILGA-Europe’s Executive Board on 5-7 December 2008, new Co-Chairs were elected – Linda Freimane and Martin K.I.Christensen, who was first elected to the position in 2007.

ILGA-Europe appoints new Executive Director - Dirk De Meirleir

On 24 November 2008, the Employment Sub-Committee of ILGA-Europe’s Executive Board unanimously selected Dirk De Meirleir to be the Executive Director of ILGA-Europe from 2009.
