Kazakh and Kyrgyz LGBTI Human Rights Defenders visit Brussels, December 2010
On 7th and 8th December 2010, Beth Fernandez from ILGA-Europe organised a study visit to Brussels for activists from Amulet (Kazakhstan) and Labrys (Kyrgyzstan).
ILGA-Europe ran a preparatory session explaining how the European Union is active in Central Asia and the type of human rights violations which are particularly relevant to raise.
This was followed by useful meetings with...
- Members of the European Parliament Intergroup on LGBT rights
- The chair of the Sub Committee on Human Rights.
- The Directorate-General for the External Relations of the European Commission's Country Desk Officers for Human Rights and Democratization
- The LGBT contact point together with the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to raise issues and discuss the Toolkit to Promote and Protect the Enjoyment of all Human Rights by LGBT People.
The activists also met with European Network of Equality Bodies and the Belgian Centre for Equal Opportunities who put their work towards equality of discriminated groups into a historical perspective. A useful exchange was had with transgender organisation Genres Pluriels about the Stop Trans Pathologization-2012 Campaign.
