A fundamentalist Christian sacked for refusing to carry out same sex weddings plans to take legal action against The Hague city council, the Volkskrant reported on Thursday evening.

Wim Pijl said he is 'intensely sad and very disappointed' at the council's decision to sack him. 'I am not allowed to discriminate against gay people but I am now being discriminated against myself... the judge will have a say in this.'

Pijl is supported by the RMU union, which points out legislation legalising gay marriage allows civil servants to opt out on religious grounds.

Pijl was sacked after giving an interview to Trouw in which he outlined his objections to same sex marriages.

The cabinet is currently deciding how to cope with mounting opposition to the opt-out clause. On Thursday, the Volkskrant reported that two VVD ministers also oppose the cabinet's position.
