Breaking the Silence: Talking About Homosexuality in the Secondary School

This manual is primarily intended for teachers in secondary schools, but can also be used in other formal or non-formal educational contexts. It was developed following the findings and recommendations of two comparable national during the project Breaking
the Walls of Silence in 2012 (see page 81 of this publication), and is designed to:

  • Increase teachers' understanding of the educational and safety needs of students who are or are perceived as being LGBT.
  • Assist with overcoming prejudice, stereotypes, lack of knowledge and challenges related to introducing the discourse on homosexually and homophobia particularly in class and school environment.
  • Position the discourse on homosexuality and homophobia in education within the field of social justice and human rights.
  • Introduce relevant facts and useful suggestions on how to build teachers' own knowledge, confidence and competences about the issue as well as ideas on how to efficiently and consistently support and empower the students.
