Justice in the Balkans Conference, 27-30 May, 2011
On 27-30 May, Justice in the Balkans: Equality for Sexual Minorities, the second regional academic conference took place in Belgrade. The conference was organised by the international visiting scholar Jovan Kojicic and a team of experts. Two staff members of ILGA-Europe were invited to speak at the conference.
The conference gathered academics, activists and human rights defenders from the region and beyond who gave an overview of the human rights situation of LGBT people in the Balkans, the human rights laws, international and regional human rights instruments, shared their experiences of successful advocacy and suggested number of international and regional resources for advocacy. The conference was combined with a training for law enforcement authorities. Joel Le Deroff, Policy and Programmes Officer ILGA-Europe, was invited to speak on the police cooperation with the LGBT groups. Lilit Poghosyan, Senior Programmes and Policy Officer ILGA-Europe, was invited to speak about effective advocacy strategies and regional resources LGBT groups can use in their advocacy work.
