Poland’s prime minister has conceded the country won’t adopt same-sex civil unions anytime soon in the face of strong cross-party opposition.
Earlier this year Polish legislators rejected draft legislation that would have recognized same-sex civil unions after a group of politicians from the ruling Civic Platform party joined forces with right-wing conservatives to bring it down.
Undeterred, Prime Minister Donald Tusk said his party would still try to overcome internal differences and produce a bill legalizing such unions.
But work has been slow and party factions have wrangled over ways of regulating such unions. The Polish constitution protects mixed-sex marriages which some conservatives interpret as prohibiting any other type.
This week Mr. Tusk said such legislation couldn’t be rushed. He appeared to be swayed by the conservative view–not shared by some prominent lawyers–that same-sex legislation could be considered unconstitutional if it isn’t properly worded and resembles heterosexual marriage too closely.
“The worst thing that could happen would be a bill that the Constitutional Tribunal found unconstitutional,” he said. “Today I don’t see any chances for a majority to be found in the Sejm over the next 10-15 years that would want radical solutions.”
“I would like to live in a country where all differences enjoy respect expressed in the law, but I have to be responsible for the legal and social effects,” he said.
