A European Parliament committee discussed a petition, Tuesday, forwarded by the Campaign Against Homophobia, complaining of discrimination by Poland’s registry offices refusing permits for same-sex couples to get ‘married’ abroad.
The European Parliament's Committee on Petitions (PETI) looked at the petition presented by Robert Biedron, who leads the Campaign Against Homophobia) citing, “Polish authorities’ unwillingness to issue certificates of civil status to Polish citizens wishing to enter into a registered partnership with a person of the same sex in another member state”.
Biedron argued that Polish registry offices frequently refused to issue certificates that are required by foreign institutions to process a same sex legal partnership.
However, Irena Lipowicz, Poland’s Civil Rights Ombudsman told the committee during Tuesday's session that the matter had already been addressed by the Polish government.
Lipowicz said that the Ministry of Interior had already instructed registry offices to desist from not issuing the relevant certificates. (pg/nh)
