The GENDERDOC-M Information Centre is regretfully informing you on current developments in the Republic of Moldova regarding adoption of homophobic decisions by a number of village and city councils led by members of the Communist Party. All decisions have been considered and adopted upon suggestion of the Moldovan Orthodox Church.

This week the cancer of legislative homophobia continued to spread across the country. On 27 March, the town council of Drochia (north of Moldova) adopted the decision “On proclamation of the town of Drochia zone of support for Moldovan Orthodox Church and inadmissibility of aggressive propaganda of non-traditional sexual orientations”. The identical legislative initiative was adopted by the town council of Cahul (south of Moldova) on 29 March.

Previously, similar decisions were adopted in two villages near Falesti, in the city of Balti on 23 February and by the regional council of Anenii Noi on 1March. All the aforementioned localities have been declared “a prohibited zone for homosexual demonstrations”.

Yesterday, at its ordinary meeting, the City Council of Balti led by the Communist Party members refused to satisfy demands to repeal the anti-constitutional decision expressed in the preliminary statement and which had been previously dispatched by GENDERDOC-M Information Centre. Relying on this refusal, GENDERDOC-M intends to repeal the decision at the local court.

Having followed a notification of illegality received from the Chancellery of State, representation of the national government in Balti, authorities of Chetris village (near Falesti) voluntary repealed their homophobic decision on 22 February.

Despite such a positive development in one of the “affected” localities, GENDERDOC-M is deeply concerned about the fact how swiftly these identical decisions are adopted by the Communist-led local councils on the request of the Moldovan Orthodox Church. We reiterate our conviction that the alliance between the Communist Party of Moldova and the Moldovan Orthodox Church perpetuates homophobic sentiments in society as a political tool against the current government.
