Lithuanian MP Gražulis Leads Chant against “Faggots” in EuroBasket 2013 (VIDEO)

As Slovenia was hosting the final game in the EuroBasket 2013 championship, pitting Lithuania against France, Lithuanian MP (and the future Lithuanian delegate to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe) Petras Gražulis was seen leading fans in an anti-gay chant that was rebroadcast by the one of the top Lithuanian basketball Internet portals. The video of the homophobic chant can be seen here.

In the video, published on YouTube on 22 September 2013, just before the final game of the EuroBasket 2013 event, MP Petras Gražulis is seen initiating and then leading a group of Lithuanian basketball fans in a repeated chant of: “Whoever’s not jumping is a faggot!” By 23 September 2013, the video had been seen by over 13,000 viewers.

Mr. Gražulis, a fervent opponent of LGBT rights, has sponsored several homophobic laws in the Parliament to introduce administrative fines for 'denigration of constitutional moral values' or organizing Pride events (you can read more on it here). Mr. Gražulis is about to join the Lithuanian delegation to one of Europe’s leading human rights organizations – the Council of Europe – in January, 2014 (you can read more on it here).

The YouTube video remains online, with no commentary or advisory note from Lithuania’s journalist watchdog agency that is responsible for ensuring that minors are protected against potentially harmful public information. On 23 September 2013 the same agency has rejected the Lithuanian Gay League’s (LGL) claim that decision by the national broadcaster to brand the Baltic Pride 2013 promotional videos as an adult content infringes upon the right of freedom of expression for the local LGBT community (you can read more on it here).
