Members of Ireland’s transgender community held a rally in Dublin today to demand greater recognition in law.

They were joined by supporters from elsewhere in Europe at the protest calling for new legislation to have their changed gender acknowledged legally.
The demonstration at the gates of Leinster House was staged as the annual conference of the European Region of the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association is being hosted in Dublin.
Organisers claim transgender people in Ireland and elsewhere in the world are treated as if they have a mental disorder.
They said the time had come for the introduction of “inclusive and respectful” gender recognition legislation.
Speakers from a range of campaign groups addressed the crowd.
