Christopher Street Day will soon be upon us. Here's a little blast from the Icelandic past in order to celebrate the day:
„About seventy or eighty people participated in a demonstration last sunday in order to draw attention to the struggle for gay and lesbian rights. So far, the organization of homosexuals, or Samtökin 78, has never brought attention to themselves in such a visible way. June 27th is a so called „Gay Pride Day". It was on this day in 1969 that the bar Stonewall on Christopher Street in New York was attacked in a similar way to what Samtökin 78‘s spokespersons say the Restaurant 22 was attacked by authorities in Reykjavík, without homosexuals being able to defend themselves. „We have always celebrated this day with a barbeque and such things, but this time we just had enough and therefore decided to bring attention to ourselves by demonstrating. In addition to the demonstration we watched a film about the life and work of Harvey Milk, a city councillor in San Francisco who fought fiercely for the issues of this group," says Björgvin Örlygsson at the organization. Björgvin names hereditary rights and housing security of gays and lesbians as Samtökin‘s biggest campaign issues. Many original and amusing campaign signs were seen held aloft.“
