Successful Budapest Pride 2012 under heavy police protection
ILGA-Europe took part in Budapest Pride 2012 which successfully took place on 7 July under heavy police protection due to violence in previous years.
This year's pride event in the capital on Hungary took place without any violence incidents. Counter demonstrators were present, but heavy police protection prevented any clash, and the approximately 3000 participants could safely march. From 2007 to 2009, counter demonstrators attempted to disturb the pride event and attacked participants, the police and foreign visitors. The 2010 Pride parade was free from any major incidents, but last year about 500 counter-demonstrators tried to break the police cordon, pelting bottles at the officers who used tear gas against them.
Board member Sanja Juras represented ILGA-Europe, and was invited to speak to the participants.
