The co-ruling Christian Democrats (KDNP) learnt “with deep dismay” that Hungary’s national football association MLSZ has extended family discounts to same-sex couples.

The cheaper “family tickets” for football matches will be sold to gay couples under a recent agreement between MLSZ and gay rights group Hatter signed before Hungary’s Equal Opportunities Authority.

In a statement sent to MTI on Thursday, KDNP welcomed that more people would have easier access to football, but referred to “attempts to stretch the natural (man-woman) family model” as a “worrying tendency”.

“For us, the family rests upon marriage and children, and the vast majority of Hungarian society supports that,” the statement said.

Hatter had turned to the authority because MLSZ’s rules, adopted last August, had excluded same-sex couples and their children from discounts designed for families of 3-5 people. According to the contested rules “a male adult shall pay full price, while an accompanying woman is entitled to a ticket free of charge” and tickets for children are 25 percent of the regular price. MLSZ has now amended its regulations.
