Archbishop Kari Mäkinen of Finland's Evangelical Lutheran Church has denied reports that he voiced support for a gender-neutral marriage law in a morning interview with the broadcaster MTV3.

In an email to Yle, the Archbishop's special assistant Mika Pajunen said that during the interview Mäkinen took a stand on behalf of equal treatment in society for human beings and their partnerships.

On the basis of the interview, several media reported that Archbishop Mäkinen had given his backing to proposals for a law on gender-neutral marriage. His assistant clarified that the Archbishop did not take a stand on the law.

It was added that Archbishop Mäkinen has declined any more interviews on the subject.
