Some 200 people in Croatia who feel they were born a wrong gender will now be able to register their new identity even before having a sex change operation.

Thanks to the Ministry of Health’s latest rulebook, transgender individuals will be able to get identification documents that reflect the gender they live in, even if they have not undergone sex change surgery.

This small step should make lives easier for some 200 or so people in Croatia, daily Vecernji List writes.

The ministry changed the rulebook upon the initiative of Social Democratic Party member Mirela Holy, who appealed to the Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor to enable the changes. Unofficial sources say that President Ivo Josipovic’s office was also involved in making the new rulebook possible.
