Albanian Ombudsman in closer cooperation with PINK Embassy/LGBT Pro Albania

On March 21st the People’s Ombudsman Mr. Igli Totozani met in his office with PINK Embassy/LGBT Pro Albania staff and activists. This historic meeting marked the beginning of a closer collaboration between the two institutions for the advancement of LGBT community rights in Albania.
During his speech Mr. Altin Hazizaj, First Ambassador congratulated Mr. Totozani on his new duty, evidenced the problems and issues of relevance for the LGBT community and presented the Ombudsman with the Human Rights Violations report prepared by the organization. PINK Embassy presented the Ombudsman with a series of requests which aim to improve the life of the LGBT community in areas such as legal protection, social services, protection of privacy, non discrimination etc.
Mr. Totozani, on the other hand, offered the maximal support of the Ombudsman’s Office for the protection and advancement of LGBT rights as well as the immediate start of work by setting objectives, areas of collaboration and expected results.
In this regard, within a few days, the two institutions will sign a collaboration agreement which will enlist the areas of common interest such as; awareness and training activities, the preparation of a Special Report which will be sent to the Albanian Parliament with recommendations etc.
After the meeting, representatives of the two institutions held a press conference where they answered the questions of the media. In his speech, Mr. Totozani emphasized the importance of promoting and improving the rights and needs of the LGBT community in Albania through a closer collaboration with civil society organizations. He put emphasis on the fight against unfair treatment, discrimination, hate speech etc.
Meanwhile, Mr. Hazizaj publicly thanked the Office of the People’s Ombudsman for this collaboration and invited everyone to join the community events on May 17th, on the International Day against Homophobia.
PINK Embassy/LGBT Pro Albania wishes to express its gratitude to the People’s Ombudsman Office for their commitment in the protection of LGBT community rights and strongly believes that this important institution will make the right contribution for the advancement of LGBT rights in Albania.
