Coming out at work is not as simple as it sounds, for the characters in this animated DVD resource, which offers a simple introduction to LGB employment rights. It helps to get the message across about the new equality rights for lesbians, gays and bisexuals at work – what they are, why we need them, and why they are a good thing.
Leeds Animation Workshop, the non-profit-making co-operative NGO that produced the DVD, has been making film and video resources for thirty years on social issues including equality, harassment, workplace and family problems, to introduce a subject, start a discussion, launch a campaign, or raise awareness.
This film tells the stories of six workers in a variety of jobs. They come from very different backgrounds, and each has their own way of dealing with prejudice against lesbians, gays and bisexuals.
James is looking for work in IT. Meena is starting her first job in a hospital. Sarah is a teacher, Barry has worked for years in a hotel kitchen. Ryan is a mechanic, and a father. Chrissie has never met anyone openly gay before, but stands up for Tim when he joins the team in her office. Their stories show how the equality laws can work in everyday situations, and why they are important for all of us.
OUT AT WORK is suitable for showing in workplaces, training courses or meetings, to employees, employers, unions and the public. The DVD comes with a booklet.
Produced with financial assistance from the UK’s Department for Communities and Local Government, OUT AT WORK was produced in partnership with the TUC Equality Office, Citizens Advice, and other organisations involved with workplace and LGB issues. Individual women and men in a wide range of jobs were also consulted.
OUT AT WORK is available for sale on a non-profit basis to employers, training organisations and anyone concerned with equality at work.
