There could soon be a law to allow civil partnerships between people of the same sex in Jersey.

The draft law would see such partnerships legalised under certain criteria and checks.

The plan also details how partnerships would be recorded in Jersey and where they would be allowed to happen.

If the law is agreed, Jersey's gay and lesbian communities will have the option to enter the formal commitment ceremony.

Similar laws have been passed in the UK and many other EU countries.

It would also set the procedure to dissolve a civil partnership in Jersey.

The draft civil partnership law is due to be debated in the States on 18 July.
