Voltrans Transmen’s Initiative

Voltrans was founded in 2007 by three transmen. All of us have been working on a voluntary basis both in the feminist and the lgbt movement. In our casual conversations, we found out that we have so many problems in common, such as invisibility both in the lgbt community and the rest of the society, acceptance as a transman (transgender or transsexual), transphobia, and violence. We decided to work on these issues. We spread the word and since 2007, we are about 15-20 people who have come and gone, and there are 6-8 people who work voluntarily as activists.

We attended the Anti-Homophobia Gatherings by Kaos GL and Pride Weeks by Lambdaistanbul several times and made presentations in these events about the problems we’ve been facing. With Lambdaistanbul, we have organized “discussions on trans issues” to create awareness in the lgbt community. Lately we have organized a demonstration in the street with TransBlok as partners which raised awareness about hospitalization of trans identities (stop pathologizing 2012 campaign). In the near future, we are planning to make films, demonstrations, performances, seminars, discussion meetings and continue to attend several gatherings. We also have a blog but the content is in Turkish:
