At least 34 cases in which people were harassed so much because of their sexual orientation that they decided to leave their neighbourhood were recorded in the first nine months of this year.

This number is based on data collected by anti-discrimination organisations and several police forces.
Twenty-nine such cases were recorded in 2010, compared to 27 a year earlier.

A total of 158 cases have been recorded so far this year. In addition to sexual orientiation, motives for harassment included ethnicity (96 cases) and physical disabilities (11 cases).

The umbrella organisation of anti-discrimination organisations says these numbers are just the tip of the iceberg since discrimination is not always registered or even recognised as such.
