Gay rights groups are criticizing the president of the Christian Democrat party for drawing a parallel between gay parents and cocaine users.

Associations representing gay and lesbian parents say they were shocked by the remarks.

Last week Christian Democrat president Christophe Darbellay told the newspaper Le Temps that he didn’t buy the argument that gay adoption should be legalized since many gay people are already parents.

He said by the same logic cocaine use should be legalized since many people take the drug in spite of the law.

Darbellay told 20 minutes that the didn’t mean to compare children to cocaine addicts.
