The Swiss Council of States’ committee for legal affairs demands legal equality for rainbow families

Zurich, 16 November 2011

It’s a joyful day for all Swiss rainbow families. The committee for legal affairs of the Council of States has considered the Familienchancen petition and decided in its favour in a vote of 8:0 (with 2 abstentions). It emphasised its wish by adopting a motion instructing the Federal Council to present a legislative amendment allowing all adults, regardless of their marital status or way of life, to adopt a child, specifically their life partner’s child, provided that such adoption is in the best interest of the child.

“We are extremely pleased that the Council of States’ committee for legal affairs recognises the reality of thousands of rainbow families and is taking a first step in working out a sensible statutory solution,” says Martina Scheibling von Känel of the Rainbow Families Umbrella Organisation. The new Council of States motion will be scheduled by the Council of States before being discussed in the National Council.
