Slovenian Family Code under the threat of public referendum

On September 1st 2011 the catholic Civil initiative for family and children's rights, which opposes marriage and family rights of LGBT people initiated the official demand for public referendum to oppose the newly adopted Family Code. In only two days they collected 25.000 signatures of citizens, who demand a referendum (out of 40.000 needed for filing the demand in the parliament). On September 2nd the national parliament (with 45 votes in favor and 36 votes against) took the decision that the public referendum initiative must be submitted to the judgment of the Constitutional Court of Republic of Slovenia. With this decision the collecting of signatures has now been tempo rarely stopped, and the Constitutional Court is now to decide, weather the referendum initiative opposing the human rights of LGBT citizens and actively promoting homophobia is against the Slovenian Constitution. The parliamentary discussion has been another case of high rang political hate speech.

The leading priest of the civic initiative against the human rights of couples and LGBT families Tadej Strehovec (who is also a secretary general of Justice and Peace Committee at the Slovenian Bishops' Conference) already threatened that in case of negative decision of the Constitutional Court, the Civic initiative is going to support the change of the Constitution according to the Hungarian model. Interestingly, Ales Primc the chief of the civic initiative is the same person who in year 2001 filed the referendum request against the right of single women to have access to medically assisted artificial insemination, and succeeded.

On the other hand the Campaign for All Families, which is uniting all existing LGBT groups, many human rights NGOs and other supporters, is continuing to struggle for equal rights for same-sex families.
