Slovenian Parliament has adopted a new Family Code, with 43 votes in favor and 38 against. New Family Code is a shameful compromise with right wing opposition. It brings only partial rights to same sex partners. They will have the right to adopt a biological child of his/her partner, but joint adoptions are not possible. Gays and lesbians will not have marriage, which remains an exclusive right of different sex couples, but a partnership. New Family Code only slightly differs with Same-sex partnership Act, which was adopted in 2005.
The future of the Family Code is very uncertain, because the Parliamentary Council already announced that they it will table a veto. Also, the opposition and catholic church-supported NGOs announced a referendum against new Family Code, because it gives certain rights to same-sex partners and families.
