Slovak queer film festival attracted hundreds of visitors
(Report from festival in 2010)
Slovak Gay & Lesbian Film Festival (SGLFF), taking place in four screens across Bratislava, attracted large numbers of avid film fans. Over 50 films dealing with lives of homosexuals, bisexuals and transpeople were seen by more than 3 100 visitors. Their most favourite film was drama The Single Man by director and fashion designer Tom Ford.
SGLFF director Ján Benec expressed his satisfaction with the 9th year of the gay & lesbian films showcase. „I think that audiences appreciated the choice of films and several events, this year’s festival was even bigger and more colourful than the one last year. I especially value the nine months‘ voluntary work of the festival team and patience of our relatives and partners. Also I am very thankful to all festival partners that have supported us,“ he said.
At the festival the audiences had a chance to attend premieres of two new Slovak films. Director Matúš Krajňák came in person to introduce his The Real Men, starring Jana Oľhová. Documentary on the Slovak Rainbow Pride event, Love Thy Neighbour, was personally introduced by its director Vladimíra Hradecká. At the festival screenings, the visitors also had an opportunity to meet the patrons of the festival – well-known actors Zuzana Kronerová and Richard Stanke. SGLFF director also appreciated the fact that the patronage of the festival was taken by Minister of Culture Daniel Krajcer. „Historically this is the first time that a member of Slovak government made such a human gesture towards the so-called invisible minority,“ stressed Benec.
Alongside the films screenings, also discussions found appreciative audiences. The festival presented debates on gay pride marches and transpeople in Slovakia and the most attended discussion was the one dedicated to homosexuality and christianity.
Some of the special events went on even after the festival: theatre production Romeo and Juliet premiered on Sunday 10 October at 7pm at Studio 12, while exhibitions Different Families, One Love at foyer of Law Faculty UK and The Fall on the Wall and Stonewall at foyer of FK Nostalgia were both open until 15 October.
