While 140 suspected hooligans remain in custody following the riots at Belgrade's Gay Pride march in October, none have been tried or convicted, Serbian police chief Milorad Veljovic told Balkan Insight.

Trouble broke out on October 10 in several parts of the Serbian capital following the parade, a target of militant right-wing and nationalist anger. Anti-gay protesters clashed with police, injuring more than 100 people, mostly police, and causing more than a million euro in damage to the city centre.

In an attempt to deter this type of hooligan violence, Serbian lawmakers amended the criminal law on October 22, when the country's parliament voted in favour of extending detention for those participating in riots from eight to 30 days.

Radojko Ljubicic, of the right-wing movement 1389, which took part in the riots, complained that innocent people were being held for no reason. "They should be more efficient and not keep innocent people detained," Ljubicic told Balkan Insight.

He was referring to members of 1389 and members of another ultra-nationalist organisation, Obraz, whose leaders, Mladen Obradovic and Krsto Milovanovic, were arrested on the day of the parade.

Serbia's state prosecutor's office declined to comment on the pace of the police probe.
