Government officials support gay parade

BELGRADE -- Human and Minority Rights Minister Milan Marković and Directorate for Human and Minority Rights head Nenad Đurđević unequivocally support to the Pride Parade.

Marković and Đurđević on Tuesday met with representatives of the Pride Parade 2011 organization committee.

It is the obligation of the ministry to support every citizen in realizing their rights guaranteed by the Constitution and laws, said Marković.

"In that sense, the ministry's support for the holding of the Pride Parade is unequivocal, and it will, in line with previous experiences and in cooperation with relevant organs, offer its assistance," Marković said.

The meeting also discussed the position of the LGBT community in society, while the ministry's and the directorate's readiness to work together the raise awareness about the need for a greater understanding of that community was stressed.

It was also stressed that any society that wishes to be successful must develop a high level of internal tolerance and understanding for differences.
