The country's senior Muslim cleric, Talgat Tadjuddin, on Tuesday called on Muslims and Orthodox Christians to "thrash" homosexuals if they decided to hold a parade in Moscow that gay activists have scheduled for May.

"This should in no case be allowed, but if they still take it to the streets, then one will have nothing to do but thrash them," he said, Interfax reported.

Ed Mishin, editor of the russian gay magazine "Kvir" (Queer), lamented the lack of tolerance among Russian clerics on Ekho Moskvy radio later Tuesday.
