More than 1000 people showed their solidarity with lesbians, gays, bisexual and transgender people in 34 Russian cities in as far as Vladivostok or Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky on the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHO).
They launched colorful balloons to the sky as a symbolic move to combat homophobia. See rainbowFlash2010.info for numerous videos and pictures of the day's action, proving that the Russian LGBT community is existing and not hiding any longer.
ILGA-Europe's Programmes Director Maxim Anmeghichean and Programmes Officer Richard Köhler participated together with 150 participants at the St. Petersburg flash mob on May 16.
“By coming to the event, people demonstrate that they will not be bullied. […] We express the wish of all citizens to build a society free of prejudice, where human dignity of everyone is respected,” says Igor Kochetkov, chairman of the Russian LGBT-Network.
