Famous Gay Russian Entertainer Now Takes ‘Homophobic Side’

He is convinced that one should not express his sexuality publicly

Famous Russian singer/dancer Boris Moiseev, whose concerts have incurred the wrath of church leaders and politicians claiming the “family agenda”, has told reporters he is against expressing one’s sexual orientation.

He told the Ukranian newspaper Segodnya that he is “against gays that show their sexual orientation to everyone publicly”.

The statement has come as a shock to Russian gays as Moiseev is known as a flamboyant “gender-bending” showman whose performances were in the past banned by the authorities.

“[Moiseev] always walks unbeaten paths, looks for new, undiscovered, sometimes even forbidden territories,” writes Andrej Koymasky in his short profile of the Russian entertainer. “He dashes where no one else has been, at least no artist in Russia. His shows are logged with strongest sexual energy, built on craziest artistic idea, without limits and bans.”

In the Segodnya article, Moiseev said “he was not intereseted” in showing marriage between homosexuals to everyone.

“This breaks the intimacy and intrigue around same-sex couple,” he said, adding: “To express it publicly in the Catholic or Orthodox church is not right towards God, towards public opinion and to majority of believers”.

According to Boris Moiseev, whose concerts have provoked the protests of conservatives and clerics in many Russian cities, steps towards gay equality “should not be allowed”.

“I understand that time is not standing still and that we are now in 21st century. But this [homosexuality] irritates people – and gays should not irritate.”

He reminded readers that in Soviet Union times he was the first person to say that every one “has his colour of love. But now we should not irritate the society, there are enough problems, catastrophes and sorrows – it is better to help people and accept deserted children in our houses and not to make shows”.

Gay activist Nikolai Alekseev, who heads GayRussia.ru, told UK Gay News tonight that he was “very surprised at Moiseev is quoted as saying.

“He was the only one who publicly admitted he was gay in very difficult times and now he seems to be surrendering under the pressure from homophobes who organize protests against his concerts.

“All this gives weight to intolerant people and shows that we are ready to comply to what they want Russia to be. Boris Moiseev is famous for shows that have been a challenge to Russian society since early the early 1990s.

“To say now that others should not express their sexual orientation is a pure hypocrisy,” Alekseev said.
