On Monday, MP Robert Węgrzyn was expelled from the ruling Civic Platform (PO) party by the party's internal arbitrary court in Opole. The reason given for the dismissal was the MP's recent comments concerning sexual minorities.
Mr Węgrzyn said he “respected the decision” but didn't agree with it. He has announced that he will appeal the judgment.
Last February, the Polish media was rife with Mr Węgrzyn's comments concerning the issue of legalizing gay marriage. He made the comments to a TVN24 crew in the Polish parliament.
“Let's forget about the homos but when it comes to lesbians, I'd be happy to watch,” said the now former PO member.
On homosexuality in general, Mr Wegrzyn opined, “Human nature is such that man is constructed in a certain way and he should live according to this nature. It [homosexuality] is a violation of the laws of nature.”
Anti-discrimination organizations reacted very quickly. The Polish Society of Anti-Discrimination Law (PSAL) and the Campaign Against Homophobia (CAH) sent letters to PO and to the Office of the Polish Ombudsman calling for intervention concerning Mr Węgrzyn's “homophobic and sexist comments.”
