EC to look at gay marriage discrimination charge

The European Commission will examine the functioning of Polish registry offices to see if they are discriminate against gays who want to marry abroad.

The Campaign Against Homophobia is Poland has complained that the authorities do not issue certificates of for gays or lesbians who want to obtain a special certificate required in some countries for foreigners to be able to marry.

There is no civil partnerships law in Poland.

“We will analyze and discuss if Polish regulations violate European law and whether they are having a negative effect on citizens movement within the EU, said a statement by the European Commission at the Committee of Petitions in the European Parliament, which is examining the issue.

The Campaign Against Homophobia claims it has had several cases brought to its attention of registry Offices refusing certificates because they were for gay couples.
