On Wednesday, the Amnesty International Moldova Organization send a letter to the General Police Commissar from Chisinau, asking for explanations regarding the policemen behaviour during the organization of the public protests held in the capital, on the 31st of August, 2006, DECA-press Agency informs.
We remind you that on the 31st of August, Amnesty International Moldova (AIM), in common with the organizations „Casa Marioarei”, „GenderDoc-M” and „Winrock International”, organized an authorized protest behind Stefan the Great’s monument, in Chisinau. This public action was based on women’s domestic violence problem.
Several of the police officers complained about the organizers of the action and asked them to remove the flag of the organization „GenderDoc-M”, a structure focusing on the sexual minorities’ rights defence.
The police warned that in case the flag „GenderDoc-M” is not removed, they will interrupt the action and will announce the mayor of Chisinau about the situation. Moreover, we’ll announce the Mayoralty that Amnesty International Moldova co-operates with „GenderDoc-M”, so that “the Mayoralty takes into account this fact when allowing the protestants to organize such actions in future”, the policemen said.
It is worth mentioning that on the 30th of August, nine members and adepts of the NGO „Hyde Park” have been arrested in Chisinau during an action of authorized protest. During this action, the participants asked the authorities to install Liviu Rebreanu’s monument on the Classical Writers’ Alley from the central square from the capital.
In the case of the members of NGO „Hyde Park”, AIM asked the police to set them free since their protests had been autorized. As far as the rights of the NGO „Hyde Park” are concerned, the responsible for Moldova from Anmesty International, Heather McGill, said that “the rights to meetings and association have been violated, and the way the members of the organization have been treated in this context constitute a serious violation of some international conventions on human rights which Moldova is a member of”.
