Latvia even closer to constitutional ban on same-sex marriage
This afternoon the Latvian parliament with a huge majority passed a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage during its second reading.
The constitutional amendment to explicitly define marriage as a union of a man and a woman was proposed earlier this year by the First Party of Latvia (known as a preacher's party) and followed their homophobic campaign during and after the first LGBT Pride March in the Latvian capital of Riga.
Today, 73 Latvian MPs voted to support the constitutional amendment, only 3 MPs votes against, while 12 MPs abstained and 2 MPs did not vote.
The constitutional amendment needs three reading in the parliament and it now looks Latvia will soon have a constitution which explicitly prevents same-sex marriage.
