Latvian MPs' response to MEPs

A Response to Members of the European Parliament Opposing the gross interference of a homosexual group of European Parliament members into Latvia’s internal affairs by attacking Cardinal Jānis Pujāts

We support and defend the right of the church to express its views about issues that are important in our society. The church has been the preserver and guard of spiritual, moral and cultural values for millennia. As the conscience of the public, it has not just the right, but the mandatory duty to make know its position vis-à-vis a phenomenon in society which is considered to be dangerous against the physical and spiritual health of society.

The aim of homosexuality’s purposeful propaganda and ideology is to force a completely different model of human and marriage relationships onto our society. A homosexual march is not an innocent and colourful rainbow. It is a bomb explosion with poisonous gases which people will breathe long after the event itself. People will not even notice how they poison and change their minds and their bodies.

In those countries into which the homosexual ideology has been brought, the words “Mother” and “Father” have disappeared. Societies are afraid to state their convictions about homosexuality, because that leads to punishment. Several clergymen have been imprisoned and political have paid major monetary fines just because they wish to live with their conscience. People are forced to sacrifice their family values and traditions. Does Latvia wish to choose this path?

Homosexuals have demagogically claimed in the pass media that their right to free speech and assembly has been infringed. No, there has never been a ban in Latvia against conferences on issues of homosexuality. Never have bars where homosexuals gather been closed down. Never has the right of homosexuals to express themselves in the press, radio and television been limited. Attitudes toward the homosexual march have nothing to do with human rights. The issue is the values of our nation and our legal and moral system of views.

Church representatives and other supporters of traditional family values stand against the forcing of the mistaken idea that homosexuality is normal upon society, against the legal equalisation of homosexual rights and the natural family model, and against the challenging demonstration of homosexuals of sexuality and immoral and hooligan behaviours.

We, members of the 9th Saeima of the Republic of Latvia, denounce the attacks by the homosexual group of European Parliament members who are trying to limit our freedom of speech and our religious convictions, and we call upon the people of Latvia to listen to the views and arguments of Cardinal Jānis Pujāts and other representatives of the church, because they are based on deep spiritual understanding of the development of humanity and the survival of our nation.

Members of the 9th Saeima of the Republic of Latvia:

Dainis Turlais

Jānis Šmits

Inta Feldmane

Anatolijs Mackevičs

Dzintars Jaundžeikars

Vitālijs Aizbalts

[Translator’s note: All of these MPs are members of the First Party of Latvia faction in Parliament; no other faction is represented.]
