Sehr geehrte Frau Freimane,

zur Baltic Pride 09 grüße ich Sie herzlich aus Berlin und beglückwünsche Sie zu Ihrem Entschluss, erstmals eine gemeinsame Parade mit LGBT-Organisationen aus Estland, Litauen und Lettland in Riga zu organisieren.

Die Pride-Parade geht auf den New Yorker Aufstand von Homosexuellen im Jahr 1969 zurück, als es zahlreiche gewalttätige Razzien der Polizei in Szenelokalen der amerikanischen Metropole gab. Dieser Aufstand wurde zum Symbol der Emanzipation und die Ereignisse vom 28. Juni 1969 wurden zum Fanal einer globalen Bewegung gegen Diskriminierung, die immer mehr Schwule und Lesben in aller Welt ermutigt, der häufig gewaltsamen Ausgrenzung selbstbewusst zu widerstehen.

Auch als vor nunmehr drei Jahrzehnten die große Berliner CSD-Parade initiiert wurde, gehörte dazu viel Mut, denn Homosexualität war ein gesellschaftliches Tabu. Seitdem haben Schwule und Lesben mit ihrem Engagement in unserer Stadt viel erreicht für die Emanzipation und für die Gleichstellung.

Die erreichten Fortschritte bei der rechtlichen Gleichstellung und in der politischen Kultur sind einerseits erfreulich, Sie dürfen uns aber nicht zum zufriedenen Zurücklehnen verleiten. Wir dürfen die Augen vor Diskriminierung im Alltag nicht verschließen und wenn Menschen wegen ihrer Hautfarbe, Religion oder sexuellen Orientierung diskriminiert, bedroht oder sogar misshandelt werden, dann dürfen wir dies nicht hinnehmen. Wachsamkeit ist geboten, Gleichstellung und Toleranz müssen immer wieder neu erkämpft werden.

Mit Besorgnis habe ich Veröffentlichungen entnommen, dass Homophobie in Ihrem Land weit verbreitet ist. Ich verurteile diese homophoben Verhaltensweisen und bin der Auffassung, dass alles getan werden muss, um diese zu unterbinden. Die Repräsentanten der internationalen Metropolen, deren Stärke in der Vielfalt liegt, müssen ein besonderes Zeichen gegen Diskriminierung jedweder Art setzen. Sie sind gefordert, alles in ihrem Einfluss stehende zu tun, um der Europäischen Menschenrechtskonvention Geltung zu verschaffen, die allen Bürgerinnen und Bürgern Recht auf friedliche Versammlung zuspricht.

Ich wünsche Ihnen und allen, die mit Ihnen für Toleranz gegen Diskriminierung kämpfen, eine Baltic Pride 09, die nicht nur aus einer vergnüglichen und bunten Parade besteht, sondern auch eine Demonstration für die Wahrung der Menschenrechte, für eine tolerante Gesellschaft und gegen jegliche Diskriminierung ist und die den Dialog zu Homophobie und Haßgewalt weiter befördert.

Dear Linda Freimane,

I am sending you my greetings from Berlin on the occasion of Baltic Pride 09 and I wish to congratulate you on your decision to organise a first ever joint march with the participation of LGBT organisations from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

Pride marches go back to the year 1969 when homosexual people in New York rose in rebellion against the numerous police raids on their clubs and bars in the American metropolis. This rebellion became a symbol of emancipation and the events on 28 June 1969 became the beacon of a global movement against discrimination which encourages more and more gay and lesbian people all over the world to stand up self-assertively against the isolation which is imposed upon them and which often turns violent.

When the first Pride parade took place in Berlin nearly three decades ago, it was also a question of courage since homosexuality was a taboo in the German society back then. But since those days gay and lesbian people have achieved a lot in our city in terms of emancipation and equality thanks to their committed activism.

The progress which has been achieved in terms of legal equality and the political culture is, of course gratifying but it should not lull us into contentment and inaction. We must not close our eyes when confronted with cases of everyday discrimination and we must not tolerate any situations where people are discriminated against because of the colour of their skin, their religion or sexual orientation or if they experience threats or physical abuse. Vigilance is called for not to allow that equality and tolerance would have to be fought for anew.

It is of great concern to me that homophobia seems to be widely spread in your country. I strongly condemn such homophobic behaviour and believe that everything possible must be done in order to stop it. Representatives of international metropolitan areas, whose strength lies in diversity, must set a special example against dicrimination of any kind. It is required of them to do everything in their powers to ensure that the European Convention of Human Rights is enforced with regard to the right of peaceful assembly for all citizens.

I wish you and all those who fight for tolerance and against discrimination a Baltic Pride 09 which doesn’t only consist of a joyful and colourful parade but is also a demonstration in support of the value of human rights, a tolerant society and against any kind of discrimination and which furthers a dialogue ragrding homophobia and hate crimes.
