First public same-sex civil partnerships takes place

It is an historic day for same-sex couples in Ireland.

The first public Civil Partnerships are taking place here today.

Two couples will hold ceremonies in the capital this afternoon after the law was changed in January.

It means lesbian and gay couples can now benefit from improved rights.

The similar to those enjoyed by married people in areas including tax, social welfare and property.

Barry Dignam and Hugh Walsh will be the first couple to become partnered in Dublin at 3:30pm.

Eoin Collins of the Gay and Lesbian Equality Network (GLEN) says it is a fantastic milestone for Ireland to have reached.
