The Reykjavík Gay Pride festival starts today with a press meeting that commenced at 4 pm; this is the 13th year the festival is held in Reykjavík. The official opening ceremony starts this evening at 8 pm in the University Movie Theater in Hagatorg across the street from the University of Iceland's main building.

Various events such as “Classical Pride,” the Queer Cruise,” the “Rainbow family festival” in Videy island, and an outdoor concert in Arnarhóll where musicians Lay Low, Eurovision performer Hera Björk, and the legendary Páll Óskar (Paul Oscar); throughout the weekend Club Trúnó on Laugavegur in downtown Reykjavík will be open.

On Saturday is the grandest of all events, the annual Gay Pride Parade. This year the parade will depart from Vatnsmýravegur road near the BSÍ bus terminal and walk down Sóleyjargata, Fríkirkjuvegur, Laekjargata to Arnarhóll on the corner of Hverfisgata street, ruv.is reports. The parade starts at 2 pm.

The winners of last night’s Icelandic Drag Competition will partake in the parade; the King and Queen this year were "Möllinn" and "Jennifer Hudson Obama", mbl.is reports.

Yesterday afternoon, it was reported that the openly gay comedian and talkshow host Ellen Degeneres had been seen shopping in Smáralind mall; organizer Eva María Thórarinsdóttir Lang told mbl.is she “would love to see Ellen participate in the parade on Saturday.”

However, the story was withdrawn yesterday afternoon after it was discovered that “Ellen Degeneres” was in fact a tourist who looked a lot like the original.

In recent years the parade has attracted somewhere between 80 to 90 thousand people to downtown Reykjavík and similar numbers can be expected on Saturday.

The last festival of the summer in Reykjavík will be the annual Menningarnótt or the “Culture Night,” held on August 20.
