Labrisz Leszbikus Egyesület
The Hungarian association Labrisz Leszbikus Egyesület was officially founded in 1999, in order to strengthen the self-acceptance and social visibility of lesbian and bisexual women and to create a dialogue with the larger society by means of public discussions, personal conversations, publications, consultations and education.
One of the more recent projects is the annual LIFT Festival (Festival of Lesbian Identities). This festival is organized every fall in Budapest. It presents a selection of lesbian artists’ works and provides a stage for lesbian performing artists. The program also contains film screenings and different kinds of workshops. In 2010 the organizers of this festival are planning a roundtable discussion with the participation of other European lesbian associations from the neighbouring countries (with a similar historical and sociopolitical background) and from countries of Western Europe.
This international roundtable discussion would be a perfect opportunity for an intercultural exchange of experience among European lesbian activists. It could make a contribution to recording the current situation of lesbian and bisexual women from different regions of Europe and enhance international cooperation. Just in times like nowadays, when intolerance against gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people is increasing (especially in Eastern Europe) Labrisz considers it important to concentrate solidarity forces and fight together for the rights and acknowledgement of lesbian women in Europe.
In order to realize this project, a solid financial background is needed. The association has a very low budget, so the members decided to ferret out the possibilities for financial aid (national and international sponsors or applications) for this project.
The association has already sent applications to different organizations (International Visegrad Fund, Soros Foundation), but unfortunately without success. The association Labrisz would be very grateful if you could support its efforts with any information about grant application possibilities for such a project.
