Dear friends in Brighton and Hove,

The organisers of Budapest Pride are pleased to hear that on Saturday, August 7, you can march again with pride in Brighton. And with particular pride, because you have proved that the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community is capable of exemplary things with cooperation and perseverance.

In the past year you have encountered significant difficulties. As the result of these problems the festival itself was endangered; it even seemed that certain programs of the 2010 festival would be cancelled or postponed. It depended on many people’s steadfast desire, faith and incredible effort, along with the help of the Brighton and Hove City Council, and many civic and business organisations, and at the cost of great struggle, that Pride in Brighton and Hove will in the end be realized. Penny by penny, and door to door, you organized the support. Each of your volunteers, each of your helpers and performers, selflessly contributed to the cause. We congratulate you from our hearts; we are proud of you!

As you know, here in Hungary we are confronted with – if not the threat that our festival will be cancelled – intense opposition and often violent extremist attacks. Our society is not sufficiently accepting, and recent political changes are not favourable. Only cut off from the city by iron cordons, and encircled by a ring of iron-clad police officers can we display our dignity, unfortunately with ever fewer marchers. By demonstrating that the LGBT community in Brighton and Hove is capable of such great cooperation in trouble, you have given strength and an example for us in Budapest and for every Gay Pride. For both those who can celebrate peacefully and with dignity, and those faced with continuous struggle. With Saturday’s Pride March you send a message to the whole world: nowhere can human rights be downtrodden, because with our combined strength we can make changes.

Together with friendship in Pride.

With our support and regards,

Rainbow Mission Foundation
