Rainbow Mission Foundation is filing a complaint with the police in response to the inexcusable desecration by neo-Nazis of the tombstone of Károly Kertbeny, the father of the word “homosexuality”, one of the Hungarian LGBT community’s unique symbolic sites.
On behalf of the entire LGBT community, the Rainbow Mission Foundation, which organizes Budapest Pride, expresses its sadness and deep indignation at this desecration of the tombstone of Károly Kertbeny, the father of the scientific term “homosexuality.
Last week a neo-Nazi group calling itself the Budapest Hungaristas covered the gravestone of the renowned literary translator with a black veil, to which they then attached a quotation from verse 20:13 of the Old Testament Book of Leviticus.
The Rainbow Mission Foundation condemns this hateful action, and has filed a complaint with the police, claiming incitement to hatred and vandalism. It is clear that what has occurred is not merely the desecration of a grave, but rather that the neo-Nazi perpetrators consciously intended to deface one of the unique symbolic sites of the Hungarian LGBT community. They were unable to prevent the Budapest Pride Festival and the March, so they have attempted to intimidate the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community in this under-handed and cowardly way.
We consider it unacceptable that someone would commit this kind of shameful, impious, and fascistic deed. We cannot turn a blind eye to what has happened. Thus, in addition to filing the police complaint, the Rainbow Mission Foundation will see to it that the dignity of this sacred place is restored.
