First Grundtvig-Workshop at the Akademie Waldschlösschen (near Goettingen/Germany)
Grundtvig-Workshops
The Grundtvig grant will relate both to the organisation of the Workshop itself and to the financing of the learners' participation, including their travel and subsistence. The adult learners wishing to participate in a Workshop apply (either individually or in small groups) directly to the Workshop's organiser, who will organise their stay and cover their travel and subsistence costs. Local adult education organisations may assist learners in making their applications.
The Workshop Organiser is responsible for organising the Workshop, its advertisement, the recruitment of learners, as well as learners' travel and appropriate board and lodging.
Grundtvig Workshops are one of several new actions launched under the Grundtvig Programme. The objective of this action is to enable adult learners to participate in Workshops (learning events and seminars) taking place in another European country participating in the Lifelong Learning Programme. Grundtvig Workshops bring together individuals or small groups of learners from several countries for an innovative multinational learning experience relevant for their personal development and learning needs.
The Workshops are open to any adult citizen who is a national of or permanently residing (or registered as refugee or asylum-seeker) in one of the countries participating in the Programme, namely: the 27 Member States of the European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway (EFTA-EEA countries) and Turkey (candidate country).
Working language will be English; however the participants are not expected to use English on advanced level. Pre-intermediate level will be enough for them to understand the activities which will be carried out during the week.
Grundtvig-Workshop at the Akademie Waldschloesschen in 2011:
„Out in Europe – Reflecting sexual biographies“
18. – 24. September 2011
The participants of the workshop will meet for an (international!) exchange and discussion on various topics of LGBT life – the personal, the social, the national and the international perspectives are in the focus of the workshop. The workshop promises to be a unique experience for all participants – reflecting their sexual biographies, getting to know gender
theories and historical facts on social movements, getting concerned with a broader view of emancipative and political commitment. The workshop offers a unique opportunity to reflect your own sexual biography in a protective und supportive setting. You will find this useful for backing up your motivations on why and how to become involved in social and political emancipation.
Topics and questions of the workshop:
- Sexual orientation
o What role does sexual orientation play in our idea of modern identities?
o In which way can we understand sexual orientation as a social fact?
- Social construction of sexual orientation
o What facts influence our idea of sexual orientation?
o What are social ideas of gender norms and gender performances?
o What kind of discriminative experiences are caused by sexual orientation and
gender aspects?
- Norms / Normality / Prejudices
o What is normal? Am I different than others?
o What are intersections between stereotypes and normalities
- Participation / Emancipation / Equality
o What is the significance of equality and participation for an emancipative
movement?
o How do performances at the gay pride day look like and how do they take
effect?
- Target Orientation
o What kind of experiences will have been made during the workshop and what
perspectives fort the future are going to result?
o How do we want to engage for LGBT-people in our home country?
Working language will be English; however the participants are not expected to use English on advanced level. Pre-intermediate level will be enough for them to understand the activities which will be carried out during the week.
The Academy
Founded in 1981 out of the German Gay Movement, the „Akademie Waldschlösschen“ has a nationwide importance as the unique meeting and conference center in Germany for political and social work of the LGBT-Community.
The academy is a meeting place, which feels itself responsible to contribute to the humanization of society. This is the ideal of the Akademie Waldschlösschen and points out the direction for an understanding of its educational work. It is carried by the belief that all humans have equal rights, the solidarity with disadvantaged, the acceptance of different ways of living and sexuality, the curiosity about the ‚unknown as enrichment’. Empowerment for selfhelp and connecting civil social structures are our leitmotif: To encourage people to take responsibility for themselves and others. We offer education and encounter, information and orientation – in creative groups of manageable size, who for some time live and work together in our house, in a relaxing atmosphere away from distractions and strains of everyday life.
The „Akademie Waldschlösschen“ is located 12km southeast of the university town Göttingen in the middle of Germany. The buildings of charming architecture, which are surrounded by gardens and terraces, and the beautiful surroundings offer a good basis for concentrated work and learning. The rooms are equipped with modern media and working materials. Most seminar rooms are in the ground floor and have access to gardens and their own terraces, so that in summer working outside is also possible.
